A letter from CIC Missionaries Neil and Kathy Vanaria working with
The Assemblies of God in Papua New Guinea

BACK TO THE LAND OF THE UNEXPECTED

Papua New Guinea is called "The Land of the Unexpected" and truly God has blessed Papua New Guinea with extraordinary physical beauty that delights the eye and it appears in "surprising" places. I remember early on during our time in PNG when I brushed aside some grass and underneath were tiny flowers in vibrant color. I didn't realize that flowers would be that brilliant in color and yet be hidden from the eye of anyone who happened by on the road. It was "unexpected" and delightful.

The "unexpected" takes many forms from butterflies of spectacular colors, to the amazing waterfalls found throughout the Mesem area, to the unanticipated happenings that seem so often to characterize life and ministry among the Mesem.

Hence, it was not a total surprise when we received the message that the bridge was out and the river had flooded, thus making it more of a challenge for our friends who were to meet Neil at Lae. I was so thankful for the Lindstroms who had offered to get Neil in Lae and he arrived safely to Ukarumpa. There he picked up our truck, the Gospel of John, the epistles of John as well as Jude, and headed out back to Morobe Province to buy supplies for his stay among the Mesem. He also picked up the "expected" flat tire - delaying his departure by a day.

We are now out of contact as if all has gone according to schedule, he should be hiking through the Mesem area. He plans to go to Samanzing, a ten hour hike from the road, and then hike another eight hours to Ogau next weekend. He will distribute the Gospel of John in all the villages through which he travels and have a chance to read 1, 2, 3 John and Jude with our Mesem co-workers. As always the purpose of these "read throughs" is to be sure people understand the content of the scripture and no error has been made in the translation that would create misunderstanding.

This trip is an answer to prayer and presents a number of prayer concerns as well. We believe there is an urgency to the work and that the time has come for the New Testament to be in the hands of the people. During two decades of work, it has been our experience that no work has been completed without a great deal of struggle. Will you join us by persevering in prayer that every obstacle would be removed so the Mesem people will have a "lamp for their feet and a Light for their path?"

UPDATE ON THE STATESIDE VANARIAS

While Neil is having fun in the rainforest, Tony and I are toughing it out in the land of hot running water and indoor plumbing. I have assumed the weekend speaking duties and will be continuing the revision of Acts if I have time.

Tony is working diligently on basketball, and school, and doing quite well with both. He is continuing his growth spurt and now towers over us. Gone are the days of step-stools! Finally, someone is tall enough to reach the glasses above the sink.

THE NEXT STEP

Neil will return to the US the first week of December in time to celebrate Tony's 16th birthday. Those 16 years have flown by - yet he's still a charmer just as he was the day God loaned him to us.

Sometime in January we will begin the process of applying for our visas to return to PNG. Our visas will be changing from those issued to an employee of a US corporation to the type of visa issued to missionaries. Although we are applying for a different type of visa, the process is still very much the same, with a number of physical exams, blood tests and a letter of sponsorship required. We are thankful that the letter of sponsorship has already been issued and we expect it will take three or four months for all the paperwork to be processed and our visas and residence permits to be issued. Although we have not picked an exact date for return, we anticipate a June departure so we have time to book our tickets once we have our visas in hand, and allowing Tony to complete the school year.

We covet your prayers for our family and for the Mesem people. This is truly a work of the entire Body of Christ. We love you. Thanks for standing strong with us, In Jesus,

Neil, Kathy and Tony
